What is a Dead lock?

Quite simply a dead lock is a lock that can only be opened with a key, a dead lock will generally have a keyhole on both sides of the lock, although single cylinder deadlocks will only accept a key on one side of the lock. The locking mechanism is operated by turning the key once inserted into the lock, which releases the locking bolt. 

Many UK homes are fitted with a number of mortice locks, these are dead locks that require the pocket of the lock to be cut into the door or furniture, you will find these on internal doors but also exterior ones too.
